I remember the first time I learned to ride the bus. I was in my second year at college and my martial arts class had moved from a small corner of the Quad to an actual gym facility about five miles from campus. Up until that point and during my whole freshman year at school, I rarely ventured off campus at all, except for the occasional excursion with friends for an evening out. But even then, rarely did I go anywhere beyond where my power wheelchair could carry me.

The month of March brings March Madness, spring blooms and kicks of the Easter Seals UCP Great Glow Run season! Three years ago, Easter Seals UCP introduced this unique illuminated 5K evening race in Wilmington. The fundraising event was a hit and it continues expand into other markets. This year’s races will take place in New Bern (March 29), Wilmington (April 26), Greenville (May 3), Fayetteville (May 23) and Raleigh (May 16).
In just one year, more than 100 children have benefited from the Easter Seals UCP Yager Group Multi-Sensory Environment (MSE) located in Charlotte. This special room is designed to help children living with disabilities, such as autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, as well as typically developing children, cope with their sensory processing challenges.
We are so excited and proud to share that Lorena Berube, a teacher at the Easter Seals UCP Charlie Gaddy Children’s Center near downtown Raleigh, has received the Terri Lynne Lokoff / Children’s TYLENOL® National Child Care Teacher Award. This award is presented to 50 child care teachers across the U.S. Berube is the only teacher in North Carolina to receive this award.
On our way home from a recent excursion to Wrightsville Beach, Megan and I noticed at the beginning of Interstate 40 that stood a sign that read Barstow, California 2,555 miles. In that instant, I saw before us the stretch of expansive highway that spanned, quite literally, from coast to coast and we stood at the beginning of the open road with nothing but possibility ahead.
