Ashley and her counselor, Brittany, enjoying a swim at Camp last summer.
Last summer, Ashley’s only wish was to attend Camp Easter Seals UCP for the entire month of July. After spending four days at Camp Easter Seals UCP the summer of 2011, Ashley knew that she wanted spend more time there. “For those four-days, the focus wasn’t on my disability or what I couldn’t do,” said Ashley. “The focus was on what I could do and what I desired to do. The Camp Easter Seals UCP experience was beyond my expectations and I left feeling good about myself and wishing I could stay longer.”

Have you ever noticed how liberating it can be when you are supported by great people who believe in all that you are trying to do? How different this is from the times when others who also are there to support you just show up because, well, that’s what they’re paid to do and yet, their heart and soul are not behind them.

Several weekends ago, Megan and I took a walk around a local lake here in Raleigh. It was a fabulous time, a chance for the both of us to relax, enjoy one another’s company and settle into the quietness of being in nature. It was also one of the rare opportunities I had to take my power chair on such a hike, as it was the afternoon of the Easter Seals UCP Triangle Walk With Me Event, and we still had access to an accessible van. It was just what we needed after a fabulous morning of celebration and community.
