Easter SEals UCP Program Celebrates 20-Year Anniversary
Roanoke Rapids, NC…Spirits will be high at the Kirkwood F. Adams Community Center in Roanoke Rapids on the evening of September 23 when residents, staff and friends of the Easter Seals UCP Roanoke Rapids Group Home gather from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to celebrate the residential facility’s 20th year in operation. The Group Home, which opened in March of 1990, is home to six adults with developmental disabilities, two of whom have lived there since the home first opened its doors. A number of former group home residents who have since moved on to their own assisted living apartments came back to mingle with old friends during the anniversary celebration. Current and former staff members marveled at how many cumulative years of service they had achieved among them. These staff included Barbara Alston (19 years), Belinda Belfield (17 years), Stella Ricks (19 years), Burlean Carter (14 years) and Dollie Taylor (11 years).
When asked what has contributed to the success of the Roanoke Rapids Group Home Program, Easter Seals UCP Individual and Community Supports Program Supervisor Deana Hart-Garner said “The staff and residents really care for each other. Staff members pride themselves on providing a safe and secure environment in which residents can thrive. We have a unique family oriented environment where residents can shop, eat and worship together if they so choose, but like any family, everyone is an individual and has individual preferences in and outside the home. For instance, each private bedroom will tell you something about the special personality of its occupant. These private spaces may reflect a Disney fanatic or the world’s biggest Michael Jackson fan, and each room is as unique as its owner. A part of our success also emanates from the fact that we all enjoy being a part of our community, patronizing local businesses and partnering with other non-profits, such as Habitat for Humanity.”
