DJ Smooth’s Story

Easter Seals UCP

Easter Seals UCP became a part of John's life more than 30 years ago when he first entered one of our preschools for help with his cerebral palsy, and he has allowed us to be a part of his life ever since.

John inspires us because he lives his dreams. How many of us dream of a new career, a new life — and then never pursue those dreams? Many of us allow daily obstacles like time and busy work to keep us from reaching our goals. But not John — he lives his dreams every day.

John wanted to get married and have a home. In 1998, he married his wife and they started their home together.

John dreamed of being a better speaker, so he joined Toastmasters International and won an award for a speech he gave. His dreams of being a famous DJ came true in 2002 when he started his own entertainment company, DJ Smooth Entertainment. As DJ Smooth, John performs at weddings and events and is well on his way to achieving his dream of becoming a professional motivational speaker with his own radio program!

Feel free to join DJ Smooth at various shows in the Wilmington area: The Midday Jams at Cardinal Lanes every Thursday from 2-5 p.m.; Dancing for Fitness at the Elks Lodge; and the DJ Smooth Beach Party in Ogden, the second and fourth Monday of every month from 1-3 p.m.

John refused to have his dreams limited by anything — including cerebral palsy. His cerebral palsy means that sometimes his body moves in ways he's not expecting, but that doesn't mean he can't be an engaging speaker. He uses a wheelchair to move around, so he adapted his turntables and DJ equipment.

As a part of John's life, Easter Seals UCP has partnered with him to find ways to remove obstacles that would have prevented him from living his dreams.
